About Me

I am a San Diego native. My family has been in National City for over 90 years. I am a product of Sweetwater Union High School, Southwestern College and the University of San Diego. I served 4 years in the United States Air Force. I was honored with the thrill of a lifetime by flying in the backseat of an F-105 Thunderchief.

My Background

My legal training was at the USD School of Law, at the National Criminal Defense College and as a trial attorney for Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. Since 1989 I have practiced mainly federal and state criminal trial work. I have also represented clients in a variety of other civil litigation matters.

I was elected to a 3-year term on the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Bar Association in 2011, served on the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association Board of Directors for 15 years, and City of San Diego's Gang Commission. I currently serve on the USD Law Alumni Board, as well as the TransBorder Institute's Advisory Board.

I was honored by Border Angels with the Roberto Martinez Spirit of the Barrio Award, by La Raza Lawyers as their Attorney of the Year, and by California Rural Legal Assistance with the Cruz Reynoso Award. I volunteer my time as a Judge Pro Tem in Small Claims Court, a mentor to many students throughout the County from elementary through law school, and I have coached teams in the County High School Mock Trial Competition conducted annually at the Superior Court.

In addition to running a busy practice I also teach oral trial skills in the OASIS Program, part of the USD Justice in Mexico Project, at National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City and the University of Guadalajara.

I live in Rancho Penasquitos with my beautiful wife Luisa, and love to spend time with our children Rosie and Rudy and our 2 year-old granddaughter Ruby Rose.
